  • The vacuum-tube voltmeter draws a negligible amount of current from the circuit under test
  • High Sensitivity – This voltmeter provides a greater sensitivity than a meter, because the VTVM combines the amplification provided by the tube with the inherent sensitivity of the meter.
  • Greater Ruggedness – A meter used in conjunction with a v-t voltmeter may be substantially less sensitive for a given measurement than a meter that might be used independently. Since VTVM meters are more durable than conventional meters of the same sensitivity, they can survive inadvertent overloads better than those used in other applications
  • Wider Frequency Range – An extremely important advantage of the v-t voltmeter over conventional meters is the fact that it makes possible measurements of a-c voltages over an extremely wide frequency range.
  • Use of Ordinary Meters – Although the v-t voltmeter can be used with equal facility for all measurements, whether in high- or low impedance circuits, the conventional meter still retains advantages when d-c or low-frequency (power) measurements are to be made in low-impedance circuits
  • These advantages are greater portability and (usually) greater accuracy, because of the fewer variables involved in using a single meter as against using a meter which is combined with a vacuum tube, power supply, and other components
